Requirements

Massachusetts State AED Law

Sports coaches in Massachusetts are required to obtain certification in AED use and CPR to help protect their athletes in case of a cardiac emergency. Good Samaritan laws also protect both trained and untrained AED users.

Summary of Requirements

Physician

Every Automated External Defibrillator (AED) provider shall contract with an AED medical director who will be responsible for ensuring AED maintenance, training, and other requirements.

CPR/AED Training

The person who is an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) provider must be certified in CPR and in the use of AED that meets the standards established by the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross. The certification must never expire while the person is an AED provider.

EMS Notification

Once an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) program is implemented, the provider must notify local police and emergency services of the number, type, and location of AEDs.

Maintenance Program

An Automated External Defibrillator (AED) must be maintained and tested on a regular basis in accordance with the manufacturer’s guidelines.

Notification of Use

Every provider of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) must contact the police or local EMS when responding to a request for emergency care or treatment.
