AED State Laws
Requirements
New York State AED Law
New York has extensive laws in place to protect citizens in the event of a cardiac emergency by requiring many public places to have AEDs. Good Samaritan protections encourage bystander intervention and the use of an AED.
Below is a full list of the AED requirements in New York. Scroll on to see where AEDs are mandatory and who is in charge of procuring them.
Summary of Requirements
Physician | A licensed physician must be involved to ensure compliance. |
CPR/AED Training | State officers and employees charged with the management of public buildings should strive to recruit volunteers or assign employees in compliance with the applicable collective bargaining agreements and Labor Law provisions as part of their official job duties. There are no less than two operators per Automated External Defibrillator (AED) on each floor or location. Operator training should include a combination of both CPR and AED training. |
EMS Notification | The public access defibrillation provider must notify the regional council of the location and type of Automated External Defibrillator (AED) that is acquired. |
Maintenance Program | It is the responsibility of the public access Automated External Defibrillator (AED) provider to maintain and test the unit according to the applicable standards of the manufacturer and any appropriate government agency. Along with this, every time the AED is used, it needs to be immediately reported to the emergency health care provider along with additional requirements for entities establishing an AED program in New York City. |
Notification of Use | Anytime an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is used it needs to be promptly reported to the appropriate local emergency medical services system, emergency vehicle dispatch center, or emergency communications. |
