AEDs for every school: enhancing student safety and response readiness.

Schools are well-equipped to protect students, staff, and the community from health and safety risks. Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) preparedness should be a priority, not an afterthought.

The impact of AEDs

The stark reality: why schools can't ignore Sudden Cardiac Arrest.

66%

of students survive SCA in schools equipped with AEDs, which is more than six times the national average survival rates.1

23,000

youth don't survive SCA annually, underscoring the importance of preparedness at school.2

1 in 25

U.S. high schools will have an SCA incident on school grounds each year.3

“A standard AED doesn’t really know its own status or where it is. These new AEDs check in with us every day. Each morning we will get a report on the health and status of every AED on campus—if the batteries need to be charged or replaced, if it’s too hot or too cold, or if it was moved.”

Boston College increases number of AEDs on campus

“Successful cardiac arrest outcomes most often come from rehearsing and training, and it’s a huge advantage that we’ll be able to do that literally with the exact same equipment as we would use in an emergency with the Avive Connect AED. I know we’ll be utilizing this function and I’d encourage other schools and organizations to do so as well.”

Data shows us that 1 in 25 high schools in the United States can expect a Sudden Cardiac Arrest event each year, so it is incredibly important to equip your campus with the tools to respond - Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs). While CPR buys time during a cardiac emergency, the only way to restore the heart to its normal rhythm and help save a life is by using an AED.

Multiple studies have shown that placing AEDs in schools is proven to significantly increase survival rates from cardiac arrest emergencies to over 70%! That’s 7x higher than the national average, which speaks to the power of having AEDs on campus.

The requirements for having AEDs in schools vary by state and local laws, but most schools have safety guidelines that include the need for both AEDs and cardiac arrest response plans. Learn more about your state’s AED laws, here. Even if not legally required, most schools choose to equip themselves with AEDs as a part of their commitment to student and community safety.

Safety guidelines suggest that an AED should be accessible within 2 minutes from anywhere on campus. In other words, students, visitors and staff should never be more than a 1 minute walk away from an AED. Colleges and universities usually have more AEDs than high schools and elementary schools due to their size and the large number of students, staff and community members they house. For example, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), a college with over 11,900 students, rolled out a new AED program that has placed AEDs in every single campus building!

A school’s AED program is usually run by the school nurse, athletic trainer, or athletic director, but by no means are these the only faculty members who can take on this responsibility. Anyone who is present on campus and committed to campus safety can be responsible for managing and implementing a school’s AED program!

Avive’s REALConnect™ Platform makes it easy to assign individual managers to AEDs and provide multiple staff members with insight into the health and status of your campus’ AEDs. REALConnect allows you to add any number of users to your school’s account who you’d want to be notified if a campus device is in use or needs attention.

Yes! The Avive Connect AED has universal electrode pads which allow it to be used on both children and adults without the need to buy separate, expensive pediatric keys or electrode pads. Simply press the Child button to use the device on patients between 1 - 8 years old.

Avive’s QuickRescue™ feature allows your Avive Connect AED(s) to automatically notify 911 when they are in use. It is a first-of-its kind AED feature designed to improve emergency response times and situational awareness for first responders. When enabled, QuickRescue will share your AED’s location as well as AED data such as its time since activation, most recent shock analysis, and other information from the device with 911 telecommunicators during the emergency. Enabling QuickRescue ensures that local 911 centers are made aware of an active emergency even if the rescuer has not yet called 911.
