Every Masjid in America
Needs an AED
Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is a MASSIVE Problem. SCA is a dangerous, life-threatening condition that occurs when the heart has an electrical malfunction that causes it to suddenly stop beating effectively. Because their heart is no longer pumping blood throughout the body, a victim of SCA will die within minutes if untreated. Fortunately, there is a proven, life-saving therapy! Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) treat patients in SCA by safely restarting the heart back into a normal rhythm, reviving someone in SCA.
SCA affects people of all ages, ethnicities, genders, as well as those who seem perfectly healthy. Although SCA is shockingly prevalent, it is rarely discussed in the Muslim community, or in the broader community for that matter. In the United States…
- SCA leads to approximately 350,000 deaths every year
- SCA is the leading cause of death of student-athletes, and it tragically takes the lives of between 7,000-10,000 youth every year
- Less than 10% of people survive SCA despite the fact that AEDs are a proven therapy for this condition
We need to ensure that every community, including the Muslim community,
has access to technology that can save lives!
Research shows that over 50% of people who attend religious services at least once a week are over the age of 50, indicating that the vast majority of people at faith-based organizations are at higher risk of SCA.
Masjids in the U.S. are currently not as well-protected with AEDs as they should be; this is a problem, but it is a fixable one. AEDs need to become commonplace and accessible in all masjids. Avive can help you become prepared and properly equipped to handle cardiac emergencies!
How to Keep
Masjid Goers
and Visitors Safe
Masjids are at the heart of the Muslim community, so its visitors and neighbors deserve to feel that the facility is prepared and properly equipped to respond to emergencies. More than a place of prayer, masjids are where life’s most significant events occur for Muslims - from weddings, to aqiqahs, to Sunday schools, to sports matches, to funerals. Adults learn, bond and socialize there. Children grow up there.
Masjids are also places where neighbors support and take care of each other - sharing kindness, community, food, worship and experiences. Most masjids are located in or near neighborhoods. If there was a life-threatening emergency happening on the premises or in the surrounding neighborhood, Muslims can be at the forefront of offering help to their neighbors by performing CPR and providing them with a lifesaving AED.
In order for there to be a meaningful increase in survival rates from SCA, AEDs need to be immediately accessible to anyone, anywhere, anytime, including at the masjid.
When it comes to SCA, time is the greatest enemy. Every minute a person in SCA does not receive a life-saving shock from an AED, their survival chances decrease by 7-10%. Therefore, immediate CPR and treatment with a readily accessible AED is critical to save their life.
After you call 911, the average response time of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) is between 8-12 minutes. If first responders are the first to deliver a shock to a person in SCA, their survival chances are, unfortunately, very low.
