Maine State AED Law

Maine requires all schools to have AED present at sporting events and offer training in CPR and AED use to all students. 

Below is a full list of Maine’s AED laws and those who are protected when using an AED in good faith. 

Summary of Requirements

Physician

A licensed physician must consult on technical assistance when it comes to choosing an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and best storage location, training of potential operators, and protocols for use.

CPR/AED Training

Only a person who has successfully completed a course on the use and operation of an AED from the American Red Cross, the American Heart Association, or the department may use an AED on another person.

EMS Notification

Anyone that owns or leases an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) must notify the Maine Emergency Medical Services on the location and type of AED that is owned/leased.

Maintenance Program

An AED owned/leased by a person must be maintained and tested in accordance with the standard of the original manufacturer and any other requirements made by the department.

Notification of Use

Anyone that owns or leases an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) must notify the Maine Emergency Medical Services of the clinical use made of the AED.
