Summary of Requirements

Physician

A licensed physician or advanced practice register nurse in the state of Louisiana must prescribe and be involved with the Automated External Defibrillator (AED) program to ensure compliance, training, EMS communication, and maintenance. Anytime the AED is used, the clinical data must be reported to the medical liason.

CPR/AED Training

An owner of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and expected users of the device must receive training from the American Red Cross, American Heart Association, or equivalent nationally recognized course in CPR and the use of an AED.

EMS Notification

A person that is expected to use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) on the premises of a work site or entity must receive proper training in CPR and in AED use from the American Heart Association or any other nationally recognized course.

Maintenance Program

An owner of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) must ensure that the AED is properly maintained and regularly tested according to the manufacturer guidelines.

Notification of Use

Any person that uses an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) in the case of an emergency must report the incident to the EMS system as soon as possible and report any clinical data from the AED.
