What is your role at Avive and what does it entail?

I am the Director of Hardware Engineering at Avive and our team is responsible for the development of the Connect AED and accessories. My role is to provide support, guidance and technical direction to an incredible, multidisciplinary team of engineers while also coordinating with other functions of the organization to support manufacturing, ensure customer needs are met, and that our product complies with all the appropriate regulation.

What were you doing before you joined Avive?

Early on in my career I started developing electronics and writing firmware for military and special forces around the world. Even though I was exposed to some great technology, I knew that industry was not for me as I was passionate about working in the medical field. For the next 10+ years I went on to work at med-device companies developing a novel respiratory monitoring system for premature infants, an implantable neurostimulation systems for peripheral neuropathy and overactive bladder, and high-power laser systems for stone and tissues ablation in the urinary pathway.

What is your favorite project you’ve worked on at Avive?

I have been at Avive long enough and have had the opportunity to work on almost every physical product and initiative, yet I don’t really have a favorite. Each has a purpose and builds out this system of systems. In the end, what we have is an eco-system which is greater than the sum of its parts and that’s the part I love.

What are you looking forward to in 2024?

Attention from the industry. 2024 will be our first full year in production, and we are going to be delivering to a lot of customers. Since we only started fulfilling orders in mid 2023 and have been ramping, I think the industry is still waiting to see if we can do what we say we can do. I think in 2024 they will find out.

In a few words, how would you describe the team you work with at Avive?

Characters. Bright, diverse, weird (in the best way), creative, collaborative, dependable, tenacious…characters.

If you had to give one piece of career advice, what would it be?

The smartest person in the room is not the one who talks the most or is the loudest. As you are starting out in your career, talk less, listen more; it lowers your chances of saying something you will regret, and you may learn something. If you become a manager, filter out the noise and look for the quiet ones.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

Stop caring what others think about you.

Do you have a favorite quote or personal mantra?

Memento Mori. It’s Latin for “remember that you must die.” You can interpret that phrase two ways. The first is literal and steers towards nihilism. The second goes deeper and is far more beneficial. Stoicism encourages us to consider our own mortality in order to appreciate how ephemeral life is.

Our time is our most valuable resource and therefore we must ferociously guard and protect it. Time is a gift that we are given once, and we can choose to maximize it or squander it. Once we internalize our impending mortality, we can live life with more gratitude and empathy. We can ensure we spend our time wisely doing what we love, doing what is important, and with the most important people in our lives. Everything else is details.

What is your zodiac sign?

Libra, but I can be such a Samantha.

What inspires you?

Being alone in nature. There is a Japanese term called Shinrin-yoku, or “forest bathing” which I love. It’s a process where one surrounds themselves in a forest or natural setting. Hiking through wilderness allows me to be immersed in my surroundings and observe my mind wandering.

What’s something people might be surprised to learn about you?

I meditate daily and more than people would imagine. When I get the chance, I will spend some time at an extended silent retreat.

Describe the last vacation you took.

Jimy and his wife on their wedding day.

Last August, my wife and I went to Tel Aviv for a friend’s wedding and for the first time, traveled without our kids. Outside of the wedding festivities, we walked the entire city, walked along the Mediterranean, and we made it a goal to try a new restaurant, café, or bar for every meal we had.

What is your favorite meal?

Shakshuka or Eggs Benedict with Smoked Salmon…properly poached eggs is the theme. Morning drink of choice is a cortado. Evening drink of choice is whisky.

What is something about Sudden Cardiac Arrest that you wish more people knew?

My sense is that too many people think the term cardiac arrest is synonymous with heart attack. Cardiac arrest is an electrical problem, while a heart attack is a plumbing problem. There are enough people who know friends or family that survive a heart attack so that confusion in terminology can lead people to underestimate the severity of a cardiac arrest.
